VETS ON SET: Film & Television Crew Training for Military Veterans

Veterans already possess many of the qualities that make for a fantastic film & TV crew member, and for this reason, we have created a workshop specifically for Hudson Valley based military veterans! This hands-on 3.5-day training, led by experienced industry professionals, will equip you with the skills needed to succeed in the dynamic and fast-paced realm of production and on-set operations.

In partnership with the Hudson Valley National Center for Veteran Reintegration (HVNCVR), this immersive workshop is designed exclusively for military veterans and will cover the fundamentals of the industry and on-set work.  Applicants will learn the principles of working on set in departments such as camera, sound, grip, electric, art, and production. Building on this foundation, the training will culminate in a mock shoot, offering participants direct hands-on experience in various film departments guided by industry professionals.

This comprehensive training offers participants:

  • Hands-on training with state-of-the-art equipment, led by industry professionals.

  • Experience with script breakdowns, script continuity, understanding a call sheet, day's work preparation, chain of command, and key production assistant roles.

  • Basic Set 101 instruction to ensure graduates feel confident working on an actual set.

  • Techniques for effective collaboration with actors, directors, and other departments.

  • Insight into departmental roles and operations.

  • Training on rental order fulfillment, truck load-in/out, camera logs, departmental specifics, video village set up and breakdown, laying of dolly track, handling coils and cables, operating a boom, prop continuity, and more.

Registration Fee: $1,200 Full scholarships are available for up to 25 participants!

This workshop is open to all Hudson Valley based military veterans, and is specifically seeking candidates from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, women, and those historically excluded from the film industry.


INSTRUCTORS:

Nicole Montagnino is a Set Decorator who works in New York City and the Hudson Valley. She is a member of the SDSA and IATSE Local 52. Her recent credits include The Other Two Season 3, Law and Order Season 21, I Know This Much is True and Lost Girls.

 

Mike O’Brien is an experienced audio professional well-versed in all aspects of location sound from ENG to EFP to multi-camera live events to narrative and documentary films. His broad range of skills cover all aspects of location-based audio engineering, video engineering (including 35+ years of New York Fashion Week live events for top tier and up-and-coming designers), camera operating, and media management. Facile with broadcast systems and digital cinema cameras and a mentor to scores of new and established audio-video professionals. His professional approach, problem solving, and calm demeanor have resulted in stellar productions and happy clients for over 39 years.

 

Melissa Guimaraes has been working as a grip in film and television for 26 years. In 2006, she joined IATSE Local 52, and expanded her work as a proud member in all the grip departments out there. She has worked as shooting grip, dolly grip, & construction grip on a wide variety of film and television jobs including “The Good Wife“, “Law and Order” (and SVU & CI), “Men in Black 3”, and “Bourne Legacy”. After starting a family, the past years have settled her into work as a rigging grip, and she is happy to have completed such projects as Marvels' Luke Cage series, Defenders, and Law & Order: Organized Crime in recent years.

 

Kimberly Sauer is a Camera Operator, Digital Imaging Technician, and a proud member of both IATSE Local 600 and NABET Local 11. Her work history includes films and television shows for National Geographic, Discovery, PBS, Hulu, Netflix, ABC, HBO, Showtime, and many others — giving priority to causes and projects that highlight and conserve culture, wildlife and our planet, empower women, and tell meaningful stories from the around the world. Her son Hammy is her pride and joy (and is also a cat). When not behind a camera, Kimberly can usually be found taking long romantic walks to the taco truck, getting lost in the jungle, or becoming one with her couch.

 

Evin Lowe is a gaffer. Her career has spanned a range of lighting experiences, including feature films, events, narrative and broadcast television and commercials. She spent the better part of her early career in the independent film world learning how to make things work when you have very little. In 2009 Evin joined IATSE Local 52 and since then has been fortunate enough to work on dozens of movies and television shows. Her break into gaffing came on the pilot for Mr. Robot. Evin’s work includes shows like Power, The Last OG, The Best Man: The Final Chapters, Survival of the Thickest, and the upcoming feature film Shallow Tale.

 

Derek Wimble - 1st AD - Film and Television credits include BULL, Blindspot, The Girl on the Train, The Americans, Annie, White Collar, Life of Pi, Unforgettable, Eat Pray Love, and How to Make it in America.

 

Debbie De Villa, born in Brooklyn, raised in NYC, has worked as a production designer all over the globe for well over two decades. She graduated from SUNY Purchase with a BFA degree in Theater Set Design, intending to design for film. This goal was soon reached with films such as Josh Marston’s Maria Full of Grace and Chris Eyre’s Skins. One of her more recent film credits is the critically acclaimed, HBO, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-nominated film, The Tale, directed by Jennifer Fox and starring Laura Dern, Ellen Burstyn and Common.

 

Brendan Lynch-Littlejohn is a 1st AD & DGA Member since 2011.  He currently lives in North Jersey with his husband Sean & their two cats.  He has worked on a variety of NYC area movies & television shows in his 12 years with the guild.  He got his DGA start working as an Additional 2nd AD back on the original GOSSIP GIRL & has since become a 1st AD, working on projects such as GOTHAM (FOX), THE SINNER (USA), 13: THE MUSICAL (NETFLIX), the GOSSIP GIRL reboot (HBO Max), MANIFEST (NETFLIX), PRETTY LITTLE LIARS (HBO Max) & most recently HARLEM (AMAZON PRIME).

 

Aaron Phillips is a versatile and experienced Cinematographer whose credits span commercial, documentary, music video, TV and narrative work. His passion for cinematography has taken him around the world to film, including personal favorites Japan, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Iceland, South Africa, Bangladesh and Cuba. With expertise in all formats from film to digital, he is equally nimble with small documentary crews to managing large feature and television crews.

 

Vincent Carnevale is a Hudson Valley-based Digital Imaging Technician and Camera Assistant. He is a member of IATSE Local 600. He has worked jobs ranging from feature films, to big budget commercials, to fashion, and everything in between. Vincent has a B.S. in Radio/TV Production from SUNY New Paltz with a minor in Computer Science.

 

Annie Simeone Morales is a New York based Production Designer. She designed Ray Romano's directorial debut feature film, SOMEWHERE IN QUEENS. Her recent design work can be seen in the upcoming independent feature TURN ME ON for director Michael Tyburski, the mind bending sci-fi feature MINOR PREMISE, the psychological thriller BRAID which premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, period crime drama PAYBACK, the Netflix feature COIN HEIST, and VILLAINS - the 2019 SXSW premiered comedic-thriller, directed by Dan Berk & Robert Olsen, for BRON Studios. She was also the Art Director on Ryan Murphy's feature film THE BOYS IN THE BAND, Michael Showalter's feature SPOILER ALERT, and the Netflix TV show DASH & LILY. She most recently Art Directed and then finished as Production Designer on Justin Baldoni's film IT ENDS WITH US, starring Blake Lively.
