Ethan graduated from NYU’s Gallatin School in 2002 with a concentration in Film Studies and Comparative Religion and lives in NY’s Hudson Valley.
Allison Jackson - While studying at the London Film School, Allison discovered her keen ear and love of sound. She enjoyed the challenge of creating the perfect acoustic environment in which to record dialogue, something she still strives for every day, on every job. After graduating in 2007 with an MA in Filmmaking, Allison moved to New York City in order to pursue her career. Within a few months of arriving, she wrote letters to various NY based sound mixers who’s work she
respected, merely asking for advice on how to best get into the industry. Most mixers responded, and one offered a job as a sound intern on a low budget union feature. During those 7 weeks her knowledge of sound, and set etiquette, increased exponentially. The two key pieces of advice she took away were say yes to every job in order to gain experience, and get into the union as soon as possible. With those two ideas taken to heart, she began working as a sound mixer on Columbia and NYU thesis films. A paid position, without the need for her own sound equipment, she was able to gain experience, contacts, and enough money to begin putting her own kit together piece by piece. Through the contacts made during these productions, she branched out into the non-union indie world of sound mixing, working on both shorts and features. After the 18 months of required residency, she applied to join IATSE Local 52. Her application accepted, she was granted access to work, on permit, on union projects. Still making her way in the indie world, she now began meeting union sound mixers and making union contacts. After passing the test the first go around, it would be another 5 years before she was voted in and granted acceptance into the local. Once a fully-fledged union member, she began working as a sound utility. However, given her 5 years of experience as an indie sound mixer, she was given the opportunity to mix tandem episodes for all 3 seasons of the television series The Following. After that show ended, she gradually made the shift to mixing full time. Several contacts made in the indie world began producing union features and her name was remembered and recommended. More contacts were made, more experience gained, and she now works full time as a mixer. She still learns from every job, strives for perfection in every job, and has yet to lose her love of sound.
Deanna Williams is an NYC based boom operator and music playback mixer in Film and Television. She is a recent inductee of IATSE Local 52 – New York and the Tri-State area’s union for Motion Picture Studio Mechanics. Before joining Local 52, Deanna was a sound mixer and boom operator in the non-union world for four years. She has just completed her seventh year in the industry, and in that time she has worked on television shows, commercials, feature films, short films, documentaries, and web series. She was in charge of ensuring that her clients got great and usable sound for their projects while working with the rest of the crew to produce a worthwhile finished product. In the union world, Deanna has maintained her desire to produce quality sound, but her role is now part of a team, and she is working towards being a worthy addition to any team that she is a part of. Deanna is passionate about doing good work and is a firm believer that showing up, working smart, and being open to learning are the keys to going far.
