Led by acclaimed Editor Sabine Hoffman, ACE this 6 session course will cover the fundamental skills and responsibilities needed to work as an AVID Assistant Editor and provide a uniquely creative rough cut editing experience working with Director Mary Stuart Masterson.

This workshop will provide trainees with:
Assistant editing fundamentals:
Project workflows
Ingesting, transcoding, syncing
Project setup and organization
Working with sound and music
Basic VFX and titles
Outputs
Scheduling, logs, etc.
How to work with an editor including editing room protocol and politics
Editing processes and principles:
Creative approach
Assembly through rough cut editing
Receiving and implementing feedback
How to work with an editor
An understanding of departmental roles and operations
Group and one on one instruction
Post workshop mentorship provided by Stockade Works
Some advance preparation work will be required before the start of the workshop. Assignments will be given to trainees in between workshops. One on one sessions may be scheduled outside regular class times during evenings and weekends.
All trainees will be provided with an AVID Media Composer seat and a LaCie USB 3.0 drive with footage to be used in the workshop.
Pre-requisites: . Basic understanding of AVID Media Composer or thorough understanding of other editing platforms like Adobe Premiere combined with the ability to take online AVID tutorials before the start of the workshop. Stockade Works will provide online resources.
Technology requirements: Use of a computer for the duration of the workshop that meets the following following system requirements
This workshop is open to all community members, and is specifically seeking candidates from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, and those traditionally underrepresented in the film industry.
INSTRUCTORS:
Sabine Hoffman, ACE, began her journey as a film editor in Berlin, studying art, philosophy and film history. In the United States, she has edited numerous award-winning feature films for the past 20 years, including Rebecca Miller’s films PERSONAL VELOCITY, THE BALLAD OF JACK AND ROSE (starring Daniel Day Lewis), THE PRIVATE LIVES OF PIPPA LEE (Robin Wright, Keanu Reeves) and MAGGIE’S PLAN (Julianne Moore, Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke), Kyra Sedgwick’s directorial debut STORY OF A GIRL, Richard LaGravenese’s musical THE LAST FIVE YEARS (Anna Kendrick), ELVIS AND NIXON (Michael Shannon, Kevin Spacey) and Jesse Peretz’ JULIET NAKED (Rose Byrne, Ethan Hawke). Sabine has also edited several documentary films including Academy Award nominated FERRY TALES. Most recently, she completed Julie Taymor’s upcoming THE GLORIAS (Julianne Moore, Alicia Vicander) and Rebecca Hall’s PASSING (Tessa Thompson, Ruth Negga). Sabine is an adjunct professor at Columbia University, and serves as a consultant and mentor to filmmaking organizations such as the IFP, Firelight Media, Reel Works, Tribeca Film and the Sundance Institute.
Justin Rosen studied Cinema Studies at Purchase College and graduated in 2014. He has since gone on to work as an assistant editor on both feature films and episodic material. Some of his credits include Waves and Passing. Most recently he worked with Sean Albertson on a to be released feature called The Curse of Bridge Hollow. When not working he enjoys video games and customizing PCs.
After a hiatus to “produce” her family, Mary Stuart Masterson moved to New York’s Hudson Valley and founded Stockade Works, 501(c)(3) a local crew training and mentorship program, and Upriver Studios, a woman-led sustainable production facility opening in 2020. She is also Co-Founder and Resident Director of Storyhorse Documentary Theater Project.
In 2019, she, Alexandra Brodsky and Cassandra Del Viscio founded Quality Pictures, a Hudson Valley-based productions company to create quality entertainment for social impact amplifying diverse voices and innovating production practices to create positive work-life balance.
